A Technician On The Turntables
"Two of my uncles were in the military, my grandfather was a Cambridge Police Officer, so we had a lot of structure growing up. You throw that in with my Haitian pops and it was like, "You better have a direction in life - what's your purpose? Are you just gonna sit here and be on the streets, or are you gonna have a family, a house and try to do better than the person that came before you?" That was pretty much the hustle growing up"
In the second episode of the Moonlighters' Club, we sit down and talk with guest Jamerson Vincent. During the day, Jamerson works full time as a Senior IT Helpdesk Administrator for a Boston-based content marketing firm - but after working hours, he headlines shows as DJ Nexxus, tours as a member of Yerp Nation and designs clothing for the streetwear lifestyle brand Yo Soy.
In a word, Jamerson is busy.
Born and raised in Cambridge, Jamerson connected with music at an early age thanks to his mother's eclectic record collection. After stacking some vinyl of his own and keeping up with the latest in digital audio, he got his start as a DJ when he began hosting his own gatherings at UMass Amherst. Pretty soon, his friends began asking him to spin at their parties. After a while, he was crossing state lines and building a regional following. This year, he's performing at the NSBE Boston Professionals' 2016 Ebony Winter Gala.
Amid juggling his music career, a professional 9-5 job and a burgeoning clothing line, Jamerson credits his focus on humility (and his wifeand family) as his trick to staying grounded. These days, when he's not at work, studying IT security or playing private shows, you can catch him spinning at Hong Kong Boston on Friday nights and on his personal website: DJNexusonline.com
